The Notorious G.O.D. is a 90-minute feature documentary film that follows armchair philosopher (and actor) Rainn Wilson on his quest to answer a question he’s grappled with all his life: Do we really need God?
God seems to be everywhere—on our money, in our civics lessons, our history books, our classrooms. And yet despite a slight uptick recently in religious interest, no.one.talks.about.the.Big.G.
The Notorious G.O.D. follows Rainn as he tries to understand why he (and so many others) persist in believing in the divine. Wouldn’t it all be easier if there was no Big Mystery? This is a sometimes soulful, sometimes irreverent, always curious exploration of how faith, doubt, and everything in between shapes what God means to Rainn—and the many humans he meets along the way.
Rainn’s quest will take him across America (and sometimes the globe) asking true believers, skeptics, atheists and those along for the holy ride—from football fields to megachurches to Ayahuasca retreats—about their relationship with the Divine.
This film is meant to follow Rainn’s personal quest for answers, which will provoke and inspire viewers to get curious about their own relationship with the proverbial Man Upstairs. Do we need God to be loving? Scary? Would God mean more if it was an AI singularity? Do we need God at home? At school? At work? In science labs? In our government?
Thanks to Rainn, the approach to this subject matter won’t be too reverent, dogmatic, or serious. As host, he will ask all the uncomfortable questions that we’re thinking as he wrestles with his own search for the Unknown.
Through deep interviews, archival footage, and hilarious hands-on experiences, Wilson will dig into this controversial topic and ask all the uncomfortable questions that we’re thinking but aren’t bold enough to ask. The far-reaching film intends to spark a renewed, accessible conversation about this giant Cosmic Force via its distribution, screenings, impact events and robust social dialogue.
