This project aims to advance our understanding of the fundamental laws of physics and the origin of the Universe. What makes up dark matter and dark energy? What set the Big Bang in motion? Was Einstein right about gravity? How is the merger of gravity and quantum mechanics manifest in the behavior of black holes? We propose a project that will bring together an extraordinary gravitational-wave astrophysicist and outstanding cosmologist. The project will develop new ideas to steer the rapidly growing experimental apparatus of gravitational-wave astrophysics to optimally address the deepest questions facing physics and cosmology. The proposed work will be distinguished primarily by the specific strengths of both PIs in connecting speculative ideas about new physics with concrete proposals for new measurements and analyses. Now is a particularly important time for this effort: Several new gravitational-wave observatories are planned to get underway in a 10-year timescale, but their designs are not yet finalized. The proposed project will ensure that considerations about cosmology, new physics, and quantum mechanics are implemented as a primary goal of these experiments, rather than added later as an afterthought.
