Mr. Lloyd was born in Germany while his father worked for the State Department after World War II. He returned to the United States at a young age and grew up near Davidson College, where his father was an English professor.
Mr. Lloyd was the recipient of the George Baker scholarship and attended Rhodes College in Memphis, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. He attended law school at night at North Carolina Central University and worked during the day as an investigator for the Orange County Public Defender’s Office.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Lloyd became an assistant public defender in the Orange County office. Within two years, he tried his first death penalty case. He spent the rest of his legal career, primarily, in criminal law. Mr. Lloyd later moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he practiced with his brother, and then as a solo practitioner. He finished his career with the Guilford County Public Defender’s office.
Mr. Lloyd enjoys keeping up with the science writings of Brian Greene, Michio Kaku, Paul Davies, and recent Templeton Prize Laureates Frank Wilczek and Marcelo Gleiser. Mr. Lloyd’s wife, Avery, is the granddaughter of Vella Handly Templeton.
Mr. Lloyd is an Honorary Member of the John Templeton Foundation and Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc., and a Member of the Templeton Religion Trust Board of Advisors. He previously served as a Steering Committee member of Templeton Religion Trust. Mr. Lloyd is currently serving on the John Templeton Foundation Audit Committee.
