Systems Engineer

Location: Greater Philadelphia area, Pennsylvania, USA

The Information Technology (IT) department ensures the smooth and secure operation of technology infrastructure, supporting the foundation’s operations and grant-making activities by managing technology strategy, infrastructure management, data security, grants management, and other software, and business continuity.  The IT team ensures the smooth and reliable functioning of the foundation’s hardware, software, and network infrastructure.  They implement and maintain robust security measures to protect sensitive data and systems from unauthorized access, cyber threats, and data breaches.

To support our team in advancing the Foundation’s mission, we are seeking a System Engineer. This role will be responsible for designing, building, securing, monitoring, and supporting information technology infrastructure to protect the integrity of the Foundation’s network, systems, applications, and data. The System Engineer will respond to cybersecurity incidents, identify potential threats, and develop preemptive solutions.  Platforms currently used at the Foundation include Microsoft 365/EntraID/Azure/ cloud, VMWare vSphere, Salesforce, Windows Active Directory, Windows, and MacOS. This position has a strong cybersecurity focus. The System Engineer will train other resources on information security, monitoring, incident response and administration. This role will report to the Director of Information Technology.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Provide strategic and tactical planning, evaluation, implementation of technology infrastructure for both cloud and on-premises platforms.
  • Design, implement, ensure compliance, and monitor all technology platforms regarding information security policies and initiatives.
  • Oversee the administration of the Foundation’s technology infrastructure including network, systems, applications, and data.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Foundation’s Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and other security focused vendors.
  • Collaborate on the definition of platform architecture and security standards.
  • Periodically audit to ensure that all infrastructure adheres to organizational policies and security standards. Report findings and corrective action.
  • Develop and deliver training to colleagues and relevant vendors on information security, monitoring, incident response and administration.
  • Conduct initial security review of new contracts and raise questions or concerns to the Director, Information Technology.
  • Support cross-departmental process implementation or audit projects by reviewing and advising on cyber security risks, monitoring, and solution development.
  • Support the business application management/application development process.
  • Manage internal and external IT resources during project implementation.
  • Remain apprised of technology trends to support the goals of the Information Technology department and the mission of the Foundation.
  • Maintain system documentation and related records.

The Foundation requires employees to be physically present in our offices for a minimum of three days per week. This in-office requirement is essential to our organization for a number of key reasons, including that it allows for spontaneous interactions and face-to-face communication, facilitates effective and efficient teamwork and collaboration, and ensures regular access to our office’s various resources. It also helps maintain and strengthen our organization’s culture by allowing employees to regularly engage in a more active way in meetings and interactions, and fosters a sense of belonging and community. In addition, regular in-office work is required for this position because of the high level of interaction and teamwork required to carry out many of the position’s responsibilities, including supporting cross-departmental projects, training colleagues on information security activities, and coordinating with various departments to solve problems related to system design, implementation, and operation. 

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Information technology, with 3+ years in a system engineering-related role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, information technology, information security, or equivalent job experience.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information to a variety of audiences verbally and in writing.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical staff, internal clients, and end users.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand the Foundation’s mission and core themes.
  • Strong personal interest in the Foundation’s mission is essential.

Location

The position will be based in the Foundation’s offices, located in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, and is subject to the Foundation’s hybrid work policy. In accordance with the policy, the Program Officer may request a hybrid work arrangement of up to two days of remote work per week. West Conshohocken, PA, is a short drive (~15 miles) from Philadelphia, and there is a nearby commuter train station with service into downtown Philadelphia. The offices are close to residential and commercial districts with multiple restaurants.
