The Conversation will produce journalism about critical civic, moral, intellectual and performance virtues in the public interest. This information, provided by researchers and scientists, in accessible language and without judgment, can help people live more fulfilled lives individually and in community. The Conversation has always known this type of journalism to be critical, but we find it urgent now, given the perceived–or real–lack of pluralism and full engagement in our society by its people.

As society becomes more divisive and people become more isolated, society can learn from researchers regarding large philosophical questions and day-to-day advice on experiencing a more meaningful life. How is moral progress made in society through and with virtues? What are researchers learning about positive ethical traits that may have resonance for children, teens and early adults? How do different cultures and religions teach, practice and retain virtues?

As an independent and nonpartisan organization with high credibility across many constituencies, The Conversation has the skills, scope and reputation to spotlight and amplify important research and deliver it free of charge to everyone. The impact we anticipate is that our journalism will lead to a wider understanding of the science of virtues – and why it matters – across a demographically diverse public. Through our content, we also expect to equip our audiences with tools they can use. Lastly, we always work to train academics to continue the practice of publicly sharing their work through writing, interviews and public speaking.

We plan to publish 35-40 stories over the course of a year, hold a webinar, produce an e-book, and publish a newsletter series.
