Science raises many societal issues that are often considered in the context of a person’s religious worldview, with input from their religious leaders. These leaders receive their training from accredited theological education institutions, and their capacity for answering their constituents’ questions and concerns is a product of their theological training. Through the Science for Seminaries pilot project (JTF ID40986), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) is realizing the far-reaching benefits of enriching the education of future clergy with forefront science. We propose to build on the Science for Seminaries project by fostering a science program in rabbinic education, thereby broadening the scope of religious communities reached by the project. Partnering with Sinai and Synapses, DoSER proposes to work with three model Jewish educational institutions, exploring science and Judaism by developing elective courses for rabbinical students, a continuing education e-course and webinar/workshop series for rabbis, and an event featuring premier scientists and Jewish leaders. This pilot project would create curricular resources, equip Jewish leaders to nurture productive dialogue and community engagement with science, and build momentum for increased involvement at the science-Judaism interface both at AAAS and at Jewish institutions.
