The World Science Festival was established in 2008 by Columbia University physicist Brian Greene and broadcast journalist Tracy Day. Praised by the New York Times as "a new cultural institution," it attracts over 100,000 people each year as well as international media coverage. The Festival’s goal is to stimulate and sustain public interest in science and to show how science relates to every sphere of modern life. The John Templeton Foundation, a founding benefactor of the Festival, sponsors panel discussions each year as part of the "Big Ideas Series."
