And these, too, were worthy of recognition...

In 2003 there was a remarkably talented field of contenders for the Martin E. P. Seligman Award. This made the judging particularly difficult and winning even more impressive. The committee of judges decided that, in fairness, they needed to celebrate other submissions. Consequently, two other authors of dissertations have been listed here as finalists for the award, and three more have been listed as honorable mentions. The two other finalists for the 2003 Martin E. P. Seligman Award were:

Johan Karremans, Department of Social and Organizational Psychology, Utrecht University, The Netherlands
Dissertation: Forgiveness: Examining its Consequences

Faby Gagne, Department of Psychology, Wellesley College
Dissertation: The Role of Mindset in the Accuracy and Bias of Relationship Evaluations

The three honorable mentions for the 2003 Martin E. P. Seligman Award were:

Eli J. Finkel, Department of Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University
Dissertation: Self-Control and Accommodation in Close Relationships

Nancy Frye, Department of Psychology, C.W. Post Campus, Long Island University
Dissertation: We're Happier Than We've Ever Been: Mechanisms behind Memories of Relationship Improvement

John A. Updegraff, Department of Psychology and Social Behavior, University of California at Irvine
