How To Enter/The Rules

Entrants are encouraged to include a cover sheet or title page that contains the following information: title, category, word count, author's name, address, and phone number. Of this information, ONLY the title should appear on the essay itself. Entrants must not include their name on the essay itself as either a byline or author reference.

Listed below is a quick summary of the rules but it is very important that you read all of the Terms and Conditions of Participation in its entirety to avoid disqualifying your essay from the competition.

  • Essays should be no more than 3,500 words.
  • Essays must be written in English.
  • Essays must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or an Adobe Acrobat PDF file.
  • Essays must be submitted online using the entry form on this website.
  • Poetry, scripts, song lyrics, and screenplays are not eligible.
  • No illustrations are permitted.

Terms and Conditions

These are the official Terms and Conditions of Participation ("Terms and Conditions") for The Power of Purpose Awards, A Worldwide Essay Competition (the "Competition"). The Competition is organized and administered by Power of Purpose, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company (the "Company"). An individual who enters the Competition ("Entrant") must comply with and is legally bound by these Terms and Conditions.

I. AWARDS

The Competition is a world-wide essay competition with the theme "The Power of Purpose." Each essay submitted to the Competition in accordance with these Terms and Conditions ("Essay") shall be eligible to compete for one of nineteen awards ("Award"):

Total Awards of US $500,000

In the event that fewer than nineteen meritorious Essays are received by the Competition, the Competition reserves the right to make fewer than nineteen Awards.

II. ENTRANT ELIGIBILITY

There is no entry fee for the Competition.

The Entrant must be the author or co-author of the Essay. An Entrant must be a living individual and 18 years of age or older at the time his or her Essay is submitted. An Entrant may be a resident or citizen of any country in the world. There is no limit to the number of Entrants. Entrants must comply with these Terms and Conditions.

Entrants may submit only one Essay. An Essay authored by more than one Entrant will be considered as an Essay from each Entrant, and no other Essays from any of such Entrants will be considered. Each award winning Essay shall receive only one Award regardless of the number of co-authors. In the event an Award-winning Essay is authored by more than one Entrant, the Company will make equal payments directly to each Entrant.

Directors, officers, trustees, employees, members, contractors, advisors, and representatives of, and other persons affiliated with, the Company and/or the John Templeton Foundation, and their immediate family members, are not eligible to participate in the Competition. An immediate family member is a spouse, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling of any person referenced in the previous sentence. Essay judges, past and present Templeton Prize Laureates, authors published by the John Templeton Foundation Press, and current John Templeton Foundation Grantees are not eligible to participate in the Competition. A current grantee of the John Templeton Foundation is defined as an individual who is the primary investigator (PI) or co-PI for a John Templeton Foundation grant that is active as of May 31, 2004. The Company has the exclusive right to determine eligibility as set forth in these Terms and Conditions.

III. ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

A. Theme and Style

Essays may be writings such as articles, sermons, short stories, opinion pieces, speeches, presentations, scientific papers, and profiles of individuals whose purposeful acts or humanitarian works have made a difference in the world. Poetry, scripts, song lyrics, and screenplays are not eligible. Themes for Essays may include personal reflection, journalistic report, scientific analysis, fiction, and other related subjects. Essays emphasizing noble or spiritual purposes are encouraged.

B. Format

The Essay must have a title. Essays may not exceed 3,500 words of text (not including notes, bibliography, and other written materials). Essays must be in English. An Essay must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or an Adobe Acrobat PDF file and should follow standard essay format. Entries must include the title and text in one typed document; handwritten or scanned entries will not be accepted. No illustrations are permitted. Tables, graphs, and charts are permitted so long as they are submitted as part of the text file, not as separate files.

C. No Unlawful Material

Essays must not contain any content or material which (i) infringes upon or otherwise violates the copyright, trademark, trade secret, or other intellectual property or proprietary rights of any person or entity, (ii) is defamatory or constitutes an invasion of privacy, (iii) is unlawful, (iv) would reasonably cause harm or injury of any kind to any person or entity, or (v) discriminates against any person or entity in any manner whatsoever.

D. Anonymity

The Entrant's name must not appear on any of the pages of the Essay. There must be no language, symbol, or other information in the Essay itself that indicates the Entrant's identity.

IV. SUBMISSION OF ESSAYS

A. Entry Form

The Entrant must complete the Entry Form located on the Competition's website at www.powerofpurpose.org/entry form. Entrants must provide true, accurate, and complete information on the Entry Form. For Essays with more than one Entrant, all of the Entrants must jointly submit the Essay and Entry Form.

B. Essays Must be Submitted Online

Essays may only be submitted electronically through www.powerofpurpose.org as an attachment to the completed Entry Form. Hard copies, disks, or other methods of delivery will not be accepted. Essays cannot be revised, supplemented or withdrawn after submission.

C. Deadline

Completed Entries (Essay plus completed Entry Form) must be submitted via the Competition's website not earlier than November 18, 2003 and not later than midnight New York, New York (USA) time on May 31, 2004.

D. Confirmation

Following the Entrant's successful electronic submission of the entry materials (Essay plus completed Entry Form), the Entrant shall receive an automatic reply stating that the Competition has received the entry materials. Entrants will not be able to check the status of their Essays and will receive no other notification until the winning Essays are announced. Essays will not be critiqued or returned to the Entrant. Following submission of the Essay, the Competition may contact the Entrant via e-mail or by telephone to request additional information from the Entrant.

V. PERMISSION OF RIGHTS-HOLDER TO SUBMIT ESSAY

A. Previously Published Essays; Permission Form for Rights-Holder

The Entrant must certify that the Entrant is the author or co-author of the Essay and the Essay is an original work of authorship. Essays which have been previously published are eligible.

Previously published Essays may have been written by employees of or specially-commissioned writers for newspapers, magazines, or other publications. The employer, publisher, or a third party may own the copyright or otherwise have the legal rights to publish and disseminate these works ("Rights-Holder"). These Essays are eligible and encouraged for submission, provided that the Entrant obtains prior permission from the Rights-Holder to submit the Essay. In such cases, the Entrant must certify on the Entry Form that the Entrant has received the Rights-Holder's permission to submit the Essay. At the Company's request, the Entrant must complete and return the Rights-Holder Permission Form. Failure to complete and return the Rights-Holder Permission Form within 14 days after the Company's request will result in disqualification of the Essay; the Company reserves the right to extend this time period in its discretion.

B. Excerpts and Quotations

Each Entrant is responsible for complying with all applicable copyright and related laws, including if necessary obtaining third party permissions, in connection with the Entrant's use of excerpts and quotations from third party works. The Company is unable to provide Entrants with legal advice in this regard. If an Entrant is uncertain about whether the use of an excerpt or quotation in an essay requires a third party permission, for relevant information on U.S. copyright and fair use laws such Entrant should visit the United States Copyright Office website at http://www.copyright.gov. Excerpts and quotations must be properly credited with footnotes, endnotes, and/or a bibliography.

VI. JUDGING

Essays will be reviewed and judged utilizing a high standard of excellence. The Company will select the judges to review the Essays. The judges will not know the identity of any Entrant prior to deciding the winning Essays. Entrants shall not have the right to request reconsideration of an Essay. The judges' decisions will be final and binding on the Entrants and not subject to challenge or appeal.

VII. AWARD-WINNING ESSAYS

A. Notification and Payment

The Company will notify Award-winning Entrants that their Essays have been selected to receive an Award by telephone, regular mail, or e-mail according to the information provided in their Entry Forms. The Awards will be publicly announced in September 2004; the Company reserves the right to extend this date to a later date at its discretion. Any such extension will be posted at www.powerofpurpose.org. Winning Essays and their authors will also be posted on this website. The Company will pay the Awards not later than sixty (60) days after the date that the Company publicly announces the Awards.

B. Publication of Award-Winning Essays

The Entrant, and as applicable the Rights-Holder, of an Award-winning Essay hereby grants to the Company and its successors, assigns, and authorized licensees, the non-exclusive royalty-free right and license, for a period of five (5) years after the date that the Company publicly announces the Awards, to publish, reproduce, copy, display, and publicly perform the Essay throughout the world, in whole and in part, in all print, electronic, online, digital, broadcast, and other media, whether now known or hereafter devised. Such Entrant, and as applicable the Rights-Holder, shall retain the copyright in and to the Essay. The Company has no objection and encourages the Entrant or Rights-Holder, as applicable, to publish, reproduce, copy, display, and publicly perform the Essay during and after the five year term of the Company's license; the Company requests that it receive written notice from the Entrant or Rights-Holder whenever the Essay is published, publicly displayed, or publicly performed during the five year term of the Company's license.

C. Publicity of Award-Winning Entrants

Award-winning Entrants hereby agree to participate in interviews, personal appearances and other promotional activities in all media upon reasonable notice from the Company, for no additional consideration. The Company shall reimburse Award-winning Entrants for reasonable travel expenses associated with such appearances and activities. Award-winning Entrants hereby grant to the Company and its successors, assigns, and authorized licensees, the right to use the Entrant's name, voice, and likeness for informational, promotional, publicity, advertising, and other purposes in connection with the Competition, for no additional consideration. Award-winning Entrants' street and e-mail addresses and telephone number will not be disclosed or made publicly available.

VIII. CERTAIN LEGAL MATTERS

A. Taxes

All Awards shall be paid in full with no deductions for applicable taxes or withholding. Award-winning Entrants shall be solely responsible for and shall timely pay all applicable state and federal income and other taxes due as a result of their winning Awards, and are strongly encouraged to consult with their individual tax advisors in these regards.

B. Entrant's Release

The Entrant, for himself or herself and any person or entity claiming through or on behalf of the Entrant, hereby releases the Company, the John Templeton Foundation, and their respective officers, directors, members, trustees, employees, agents, attorneys, representatives, judges, affiliates, successors, assigns, and licensees (collectively, "Released Parties") from any and all damages, claims, causes of action, liabilities, and expenses relating to Entrant's participation, or exclusion or disqualification from participation, in the Competition.

C. Entrant's Indemnification

The Entrant, for himself or herself and any person or entity claiming through or on behalf of the Entrant, hereby indemnifies, defends, and holds harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all damages, claims, causes of action, liabilities, and expenses (including attorneys' fees and costs) incurred by the Released Parties arising from the Entrant's (i) violation of these Terms and Conditions, (ii) submission of an Essay for which the Entrant does not possess the requisite legal or other proprietary rights (in whole or in part) or necessary permissions from third parties, and (iii) participation, or exclusion or disqualification from participation, in the Competition.

D. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

The Competition is governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, USA. The Entrant hereby agrees that all transactions involving the Competition, the Company, and this website (including performance or nonperformance of these Terms and Conditions) shall be deemed to have occurred solely in Atlanta, Georgia. The Entrant hereby agrees that the appropriate state or federal court in Atlanta, Georgia shall be the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for any kind of dispute or litigation between the Entrant and the Released Parties. The Entrant specifically consents to personal jurisdiction in Atlanta, Georgia and waives any right the Entrant may have to remove or transfer any case or proceeding to any other jurisdiction, state, or country.

E. Void Where Prohibited

The Competition is void where prohibited by applicable law.
