John Templeton Foundation Names Dr. Arthur Schwartz Executive Vice President
CONSHOHOCKEN PADr. Arthur Schwartz has been named to the new position of executive vice president of John Templeton Foundation.
Dr. Schwartz has been on the Foundations senior management staff since 1995. Among his recent projects are the What Works in Enterprise-based Solutions to Poverty prize competition, (a key aspect of the Foundations expanding focus on free enterprise solutions) to promote public understanding of how entrepreneurship and market reforms are alleviating poverty and accelerating its disappearance in areas of the world where poverty has been most oppressive; and Spirituality in Higher Education, a landmark national study that examines the search for meaning and purpose among college students, directed by the Higher Education Research Institute at U.C.L.A. He has also directed the Foundations recent funding initiatives within the field of gifted education and free enterprise, and serves as executive editor for In Character: A Journal of Everyday Virtues.
In his new role, Dr. Schwartz will also be responsible for building an internal management framework that emphasizes continuous learning and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of process and performance.
In announcing the appointment, Dr. John Templeton, President, noted that the Foundation has always sought to be a constructive change agent through its various programs and grants. He indicated that Dr. Schwartz, in his new position, will embrace the role of being an internal change agent as well.
Prior to joining John Templeton Foundation, Dr. Schwartz taught at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and before that he served for several years as director of dropout prevention programs for the School District of Philadelphia. In 1990, he was recognized for successful efforts to reduce school dropouts at a White House ceremony hosted by President George H.W. Bush.
Dr. Schwartz received his doctorate in moral education from Harvard University and is the recipient of an honorary law degree from College of the Ozarks, where he was commencement speaker in 1999.
Founded in 1987, John Templeton Foundation annually provides more than $60 million in funding on behalf of work in human sciences and character development, science and theology research, as well as free enterprise programs and awards worldwide. For more information see Dr. Schwartzs biography.
