Spiritual Capital
The theme of spiritual capital builds on recent research on social capital, which shows that religion is a major factor in the formation of social networks and trust. The Foundation supports qualitative and quantitative research on the nature and benefits of spiritual capital, primarily within the fields of economics, sociology and political science.

The Spiritual Capital Research Program: Developing a New Interdisciplinary Field

These
grants support a program to catalyze new research in the field of spiritual
capital. This is an interdisciplinary social scientific research initiative
on the economic and social consequences of religion and spirituality. The
program seeks to integrate the concept of spiritual capital into the human
sciences by supporting rigorous and innovative research to build a network of
scholars for a new field of study.

- A Series of Three Annual Conferences on Religion Research

- This grant is to launch a series of annual, day-long conferences to present research on religious practice and its implications for individuals and society. The Heritage Foundation is partnering with CRIAD at Baylor University and Child Trends, a nonprofit and nonpartisan research center, to plan these events. The grant will support of the first three conferences, which are scheduled to focus on civic engagement, marriage and family, and parenting and child development.

project will examine the connections between religion and social capital so
that Americans might better understand the place of religion in our civic
infrastructure. The grant will support a major new survey that seeks to
understand how religious belonging, behaving, and believing each has an
impact on individuals' levels of social capital.

- This grant helped to establish the Spiritual Enterprise Institute [SEI], an organization dedicated to exploring the intersection of business, the economy, and spirituality. One aim of the Institute is to stimulate new thinking on the importance of "spiritual capital."
